Built for Northern Michigan Terrain

Northern Michigan's terrain — rolling hills, sloped lakefront lots, sandy bluffs — creates constant demand for well-built retaining walls. A retaining wall done right solves real problems: erosion, grade changes, unusable yard space, and drainage. A retaining wall done wrong becomes a problem of its own.

American Masonry builds retaining walls in brick, block, natural stone, and concrete across Traverse City, Leelanau County, Charlevoix, and the surrounding region. We've been doing structural and decorative masonry in this terrain for over 30 years.

Types of Retaining Walls We Build

  • Natural fieldstone and cut stone walls
  • Brick retaining walls
  • Concrete block (Allan Block, Versa-Lok, and similar systems)
  • Garden walls and raised planting beds
  • Tiered wall systems for steep grades
  • Lakefront and shoreline erosion walls
  • Decorative landscape walls

What Makes a Retaining Wall Last

The two most common retaining wall failures are inadequate drainage (water builds up behind the wall and pushes it over) and insufficient base depth (frost heave in Northern Michigan winters lifts and shifts the wall). We design every wall with proper drainage aggregate and perforated drain tile behind the wall, and we set footings below the frost line. These details are what separate a 5-year wall from a 30-year wall.

Retaining Wall Repair

If an existing wall is leaning, bowing, cracking, or has gaps at the joints, it's worth having it assessed before it fails completely. We repair block, brick, and stone retaining walls throughout the region. Sometimes repair is straightforward — drainage correction and repointing. Sometimes a section needs to be rebuilt. We'll tell you which and why.

Warning Signs Your Wall Needs Attention

Retaining wall failure rarely happens all at once. These are the early signs to watch for.

Wall Is Leaning or Bowing

Hydrostatic pressure behind the wall is exceeding the structure's capacity. This is a serious warning — act before it fails completely.

Cracks Along Mortar Joints

Settlement or freeze-thaw stress on the structure. Hairline cracks become pathways for water; water becomes frost; frost becomes bigger cracks.

Water Pooling at Base

Drainage failure behind the wall — the #1 cause of retaining wall failure in Northern Michigan. Drainage correction is often enough to save the wall.

Erosion at the Base

Water is undermining the footing. Once the footing is compromised, the wall cannot be saved without rebuilding.

Gaps or Voids in the Wall

Material has shifted. Structural integrity is compromised. Small voids grow fast once freeze-thaw cycles find them.

Wall Is 20+ Years Old

Drainage aggregate compacts over time. An aging wall that hasn't been inspected may be working harder than it was designed to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below the frost line — which is 42 inches in most of Northern Michigan. This is non-negotiable for walls intended to be permanent. Walls set at shallower depths will heave and shift within a few winters. We set every footing to the correct depth.
Natural fieldstone or dry-laid boulders are often the best choice for lakefront or shoreline applications — they allow water to move through the wall naturally, which is critical for shoreline erosion control. For higher walls or more structured applications, segmental concrete block (Allan Block, Versa-Lok) with proper drainage aggregate is excellent.
Sometimes. If the lean is minor and the footing is sound, drainage correction and re-pinning of the wall face can extend its life. But in many cases — particularly where the lean exceeds 2 inches from vertical — a section needs to be rebuilt. We'll assess and be straight with you about which is warranted.
Extremely important. Hydrostatic pressure — water building up behind the wall — is the #1 cause of retaining wall failure. Every wall we build includes drainage aggregate (stone) behind the wall face and a perforated drain tile at the base. Walls built without this drainage detail typically fail within 5–10 years.
