Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits in this region need to be built with our climate in mind. Exposed masonry goes through 40–60 freeze-thaw cycles every winter. That means proper mortar selection, adequate footing depth below the frost line (at least 42 inches in most of Northern Michigan), and cap detailing that prevents water infiltration. We build for longevity — not just for looks.
